Constant flashing red light. When I press the roof down button nothing happens. No windows go down halfway, no sound from the locking mechanism, nothing. Others have said there's a loom wire that travels across the soft top on the inside that sometimes corrodes and breaks, causing the roof to not work at all. I'm not sure how to check this.
I have a BMW 118D convertible, 2009 model. The roof won't come down. When I press the button/switch for the roof to go down a red light flashes above the switch and on the screen in front of the driver's seat there is a warning symbol (same symbol as on the button/switch to close the roof).
Check the electric motors at that are located underneath the fabric in the trunk of the car. One is behind the left tail light the other underneath the roof hold. First open them up if the gears are exposed it means that they are not engaged. To re engage simply push them back into place.

It goes like this: when I press the 'open roof' button, the rear shell goes on top of the front shell as it is supposed to, and when it is time for the trunk to open, it does not. I still hear the pump working for another ~5 seconds after which the car gives up and starts flashing red light. It started a few years ago.

I did search but I couldn't find any info, I tried putting the roof up, it got right up to the point where the latch motor normally takes over but it didn't, flashing red light and i had to lock it shut with an Allen key (luckily i was at home because it's missing from the tool kit!)
Hi all I’m very new on here and have little mechanical knowledge but willing to give anything a go My 325i convertible roof has stopped working I have a flashing red light on the control panel..the roof unlocks and retracts about 10” and that’s it ..and it won’t close from there either ..I have to close it using the little Alan key !!
